The FA Cup, officially known as The Football Association Challenge Cup, is the oldest national football competition in the world. It was first held in 1871–72 and has since become one of the most prestigious tournaments in football.
The tournament was introduced by Charles W. Alcock, secretary of The Football Association, as a knockout competition for clubs in England and Wales. The first-ever final was held in 1872, with Wanderers defeating Royal Engineers 1–0.
The original FA Cup trophy was used until 1895. A replacement was created, which itself became iconic, but it was stolen in 1895. The current design dates back to 1911.
The FA Cup allows clubs from across the English football pyramid to compete, from top Premier League sides to non-league teams, making it unique in its inclusivity.
The tournament is famous forgiant-killing where lower-league teams defeat higher-ranked opponents. Notable moments include non-league Hereford United beating Newcastle United in 1972 and Wigan Athletic defeating Manchester City in the 2013 final.
